As I look down on the world from cruising altitude, there are many trouble spots. The economy sucks; the political climate is horrible; the world looks more fragmented than ever. If you go by first impressions, you will likely conclude that we are doomed.
It does seem bleak, but if you look closer there are bright spots on the horizon. In all of the turmoil, there are pockets of resistance to the march of global corporate fascism that the mainstream press calls globalization. Fair trade is spreading, and some very smart people are looking at and proposing alternative ways to handle economies, elections and resources. Rising from the ashes of the Fukashima nuclear power disaster, renewed awareness of the dangers of nuclear power and a spate of accidents and leaks are pressuring governments to rethink their energy policies. And research into the nature of consciousness is showing that we are more than we have thought, and we have the potential to do much more than we have believed.
I believe the revolution in consciousness is the key to us winning the race between self-destruction and sustainable culture. Better technology is nice, but without some major shifts in global consciousness and will, we will not change direction soon enough to make a critical difference.
I would like to see all of the pagans and magic-users join forces and link up to work for a public awakening and rejection of abusive politics and propaganda. If the media and our leaders see that we will no longer tolerate shallow lies, illegal wars and misrepresentation of facts regarding climate change, the plundering of the middle and lower economic classes and the so-called war on terror, we may get better policies that are geared to the welfare of human beings instead of international corporations and power-brokers.
Magic is fine, but you have to back it up with action. If we can get enough people to reject "news" that is geared to support the status-quo we may stimulate real public debate and force changes that will redirect us onto a sustainable path that does not depend on the exploitation of the poor to support itself. Support alternative new sources that do not indulge propaganda, but rather expose it. And protect internet neutrality.
A shift in consciousness will lead to the development of clean technologies and changes in our culture that will benefit everyone. Cities will turn to efficient public transportation, more and better bike lanes and walking paths. There will be more parks and green areas, community gardens and neighborhood centers. We will spend more on needed infrastructure and improving the quality of life at home and less on wars and foreign policy based on dominance and manipulation. Instead of bullying countries to do what we want, we will enlist their cooperation and support as partners in building a better, cleaner and safer world.
It can happen if we all get involved.
